Youngsters did Orissa proud in the World Youth Chess Championship at Halkidiki in Greece with Rudraksh Parida winning the silver medal and Anwesh Upadhyaya clinching his International Master (IM) title today.
Bhubaneswar boy Rudraksh achieved the success in the under-8 open category. He secured nine points from 11 rounds, registering eight wins, two draws and one defeat.
Anwesh, also from Bhubaneswar, became the fourth IM of Orissa after Sekhar Chandra Sahu, Swayangsu Satyapragyan and Debashis Das, obtaining his third and final norm in the under-18 open category.
Altogether eight players from Orissa took part in the 11-round World Youth Championship. Among others, Adyasa Mohapatra (8 points) and Saina Salonika (6.5) finished fifth and 21st respectively in under-8 girls category; Sidhant Mohapatra (7.5) occupied 15th position in under-12 open section; Sunyasakta Satpathy (8.5) claimed fourth place in under-12 girls group; Utkal Ranjan Sahoo (6) stood 41st in under-14 open category; Anwesh Upadhyaya (7) and Swayams Mishra (6.5) finished 11th and 31st respectively in under-18 open section.
